Anime Wrap-Up #18

Review speedrun!!!

This time, I am covering these shows:

As everything is calming down and I am trying to find my way around my hobbies and things I enjoy doing, let's see if I can come back to this section as well.

Tu Bian Yingxiong BABA

It's very bold to talk about any kind of a story here. TO BE HERO makes absolutely zero sense. It builds on the comedy relief factor, but it's honestly not even funny. Toilet humor aside, bizarre occurrences and characters that come out of nowhere and only bring more chaos don't exactly help create a show that is memorable or good.

Art is one of the things that is somehow decent on this show, the character design is fun and playful. Which sits great with the mood of the show, but it comes down to animation again. Which is lazy, and not really an animation. Some of the Instagram fan animations are in better quality than this show and that's simply funny to me.

All in all, this show was a huge let down that I didn't expect, given how much I loved it's sequel.

Rokujouma no Shinryakusha!?

This was actually surprisingly fun! Rokujouma... is your classical 2014 no-plot bunch-of-cute-girls and weirdo-loner-boy-mc show. With a spooky twist - each of the girls is some sort of magical being. We have a ghost, a magical girl, an ancient goddess... and more!

In the beginning I didn't have much hopes. The show is actually freaking dumb and so much is happening and you almost don't want to follow. But it slowly picks up and you get pulled into this strange world and it's comedy.

Nothing of value happens, but the shows finds a way to give you all the loved clichés - school episode, beach episode... awkward moments. And they all work in favor of this show, surprisingly, making it... not so bad after all.

Art and animation are both painfully 2014, where all the characters suffer from same face syndrome, distinguished only by three things - hair color, height and boobs size. Our MC, as you might guess, is in all shapes & forms an average dude that you meet everyday walking down the street.
The fighting or magical scenes look quite decent, so while it's not hitting any charts, it's not the worst thing you've seen.

If we gently tap at the characters, there is one I want to bring to attention and that is Yurika Nijino - the magical girl. Thorough the whole show, nobody believes that she is an actual magical girl, and they call her a cosplayer. Her luck just gets worse and worse, because anytime they're playing gamer, having a competition or doing anything... she gets the worst luck and looses whatever she can. That makes her character, in my eyes, quite lovable.

So again, by watching this you won't gain anything, but you will not loose anything either.

Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru.

This was not my pick. This was a show my boyfriend made me watch and we both regret it deeply. 😂

First of all, SNAFU (for whatever reason) is a show that looks nothing like it's poster. The art is awful, the animation is bad and I cannot even praise the music in this show.
Next, the characters? Jesus Christ.

The male MC is a whiny bitch that thinks the world revolves around everyone but him, but he is okay with it and totally not depressed that he cannot even talk to girls without being looked at as a creep. But that's fine, because he's edgy, a lone wolf, he doesn't need anyone, anything and least of all love.

Unless... this cute black-haired beauty that is in the same club as him would like him. Then he is willing to forgive and forget everything about his dark self and actually give her a shot. But obviously, only if she wants to.

SNAFU introduces a love triangle, which honestly is not a love triangle at all. Straight away you can predict who will end up with who, and why the other girl will never even come closer. It's so transparent, it's not only boring but it's bringing shame to all the other rom-coms that are actually well made.
It doesn't even work as a parody for this genre because it's not making fun of it, it's just doing it wrong!

The plot basically doesn't move. The first season is just a 13 episode long pilot for what I assume is a story that never gets any conclusion and if it does it will be unsatisfying and will make you say "finally, jeez".
What doesn't help the case is the unlovable cast. And I am not only talking about the walking depression of MC. But the main heroine is "better than everyone else" type of forced-loner, the pink haired catastrophe is just obnoxious, MC's sister has a weird brother complex and no one else stands off.
Even the bullies are so pathetic.

AND THE WORST THING OF THEM ALL?! The way they, out of nowhere, for no freaking reason, go for the "we are all connected in the most weird ways" trope. AND SHE WASN'T EVEN DRIVING THE CAR, SO WHAT WAS THE POINT OF FORCING THAT CONNECTION?!

2013 was a dark year, honestly. Can you believe some people rewatched this show 13 times?

The only good thing I have to say about this show is the existence of Saika Totsuka, femboyish looking classmate, who our main hero would fck at every given opportunity, throwing his heterosexuality out of the window everytime Saika walks into the room.
That was actually funny.

Unfortunately, there is more of this show and I promised to finish it. So brace yourself... and me.

xxxHOLiC

Why is this show so liked goes beyond me.

The characters are disproportioned, barely drawn, barely animated and the story is so boring, I doubt I can even call it a story.
Nothing happens the whole time (and this show has 25 episodes), it builds on supernatural but it looses the edge of supernatural as a concept and we are left with sob stories of ghosts and ghouls.

It was a giant miss and I am actually disappointed because I was excited about this anime.

Outbreak Company

Another show that isn't even worth mentioning.

The characters are bland & boring, the story is so incredibly dumb (really, getting isekai-ed only to bring manga to a fantasy world?) and there is nothing that would actually make it interesting.

You know that the cute girl gets harassed because she's a servant, while the loli queen is incredibly annoying and always in your face. You know that the mc is a hopeless walking nobody who doesn't blink twice about living a new and different life.

I have never seen a show that looked this good and was this bad. Like. Seriously. It's so bad. One would think you cannot mess up an anime like this, ever.

Bakuman

Bakuman is a story of two classmates who decided to start making manga. While being supported by their surroundings and even their editor (who cheers on them despite covering their much better competition) and they show passion and determination to make it big.

The first season didn't do much of a good job at bringing the story forward, but it was a great introduction to their universe and a perfect bait so you'd want to see more and see how the story plays out.

What I have to praise is the way they decided to weight friendship of Moritaka and Akito. They both are working so hard, but only one of them is being praised, while the other is looked down on for "dragging the talented one down".

I cannot wait to see what else happens.

Nanatsu no Taizai 3, 4 + Movie

After many many years I am finally done with Seven Deadly Sins.

It's a flawed anime with a lot to make up for, and even though the writing isn't always the best, the show looks very decent, the character design is visually pleasing, fighting animation is great and their backstories are always making me a sobbing mess.

The conclusion of the story was amazing, I appreciated the author answering all the questions and giving us all the small windows with which we could look into the future lives and families of all of our beloved characters.

I won't badmouth this show, because I have fond memories of it, and I don't see the critique internet gives Nanatsu no Taizai. So I am leaving this series at this, without continuing the spin-offs and taking my cherished memories.

Given: Umi e

The last movie for this show is a beautiful wrap up of deep emotions, character's struggles and it sets the characters free, so they can explore and face the future the way they want to, together.

I loved Given, as a manga and as a show. And I think it brings something new and unique to the world of BL. Big thumbs up to the author who knows how to play our feelings like a fiddle. And good luck to future works, I cannot wait to see what they do and I am ready to follow them.

Please, watch Given. All of it.

Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 2, 3

I have no idea why I came back to Konosuba. Probably because I wanted a closure. (Which I didn't get, because another season is in the making).

Konosuba has the same problems as it had in the first season - it has bad animation, art style that doesn't stand off and characters that only work in a group, because standing alone, they would not stand a chance and wouldn't work either.

The story didn't move at all. Konosuba works on the same system at all times - we get mixed up with a super-monster, fight it and get accused of wrong doings-but somehow it gets all resolved and we are rich so let's enjoy life!

Konosuba really isn't worth the time or the effort to pay attention to it. But at least it doesn't get any worse.

Nazo no Kanojo X

I am a firm believer that 90s anime and anime with 90s vibes are always great, in quality, in story and in morale. This show proved me wrong in a way that I didn't expect.

When the anime promised a mysterious girlfriend, I didn't expect her to have superpowers of her own saliva. Apparently, thanks to her saliva, she can feel whatever the other person feels and make the other person understand her emotions.
So, you know, of course her boyfriend sucks on her wet finger every day after school.

Nothing happens, it's uncomfortable and it turns around the idea and concept of sex, making it having less plot than average hentai.

World Trigger

73 episodes. I got through 73 episodes and I still have no idea what the point of this story was.
It's another show fixated on appealing to male audience, and I cannot work with those, unfortunately.

A lot happens in 73 episodes, very little is connected to the real plot, and in the end, nothing gets resolved, it just stops in the middle of nothing, as a bait to continue watching. But they won't get me, because I couldn't care less. 💛

Onipan!

Onipan is the most underrated CGDCT show that I have ever stumbled upon.

It follows the daily life of three oni girls, whose personality will be clear to you just from their hair color, and together they are going through many many bizarre experiences.
On their side they have Kuma (who hides a secret) and magical pants! (that only change their clothes but don't do anything else) and weird friends (like descendant of oni slayer, or hidden idol) and together they'll try to change the way people see oni forever!

It's adorable, simple, and short. Why not give it a chance?

Bubble!

Bubble! doesn't look good, cannot justify it's own animation and doesn't bring anything worth mentioning.
It has an amazing set-up, great universe and good music... but none of that is good enough to actually build a story that would stick with you in the long run.

The song was okay tho.

JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken (TV)

JoJo is a show loved by many (usually virgin boys apparently) that has amazing potential as meme maker and source of many frames that are viral on the internet... but it doesn't appeal to most of female audience, and I am one of those.

I understand the fun of it, and I see the ridiculousness which is cherished by fans, but for me, it was missing the mark.
Number 1 problem I had was - when I finally got to be a fan of Jonathan and Dio, and I was ready to see what would happen to them and how their story would unfold ("It was me, Dio!") they took it away from me, threw in 50 years into the future to JoJo's grandson JoJo... and that's where they completely lost me and I just straight up gave up.

Why does every shounen show do this to me??? They introduce a conflict that is breathtaking, grippling, interesting and slightly twisted... and then they abandon it for something actually boring that is pretending to be the way things played out... only to come back to the original plot when it's too late for salvation.
Nooooo!

JoJo's second part of the story (with the grandson) didn't interest me nearly as much as Dio's story. The way he was cruel to women and cats wasn't even funny, nor it was excusable by that poison in his body... or whatever that was.
His character was horrrid.

I admit the art and animations were pretty much stellar. There is so few shows that are this detailed and even if exaggerated, they make it work for themselves. It was actually great. Really nice to look at.

And then the meme music, obviously, was really good too. Openings and endings were good bops, and if you cannot skip those, you basically won.

Overall, I cannot praise this show and cannot say that I am interested in watching more of it. Keep it boys, it was made for you.
