Spring 2025 - First Look

Spring comes with full force and my first hard task is to choose what I want to watch...
There is a lot. And I even have sequels to look forward to.
With that being said, let's take a look at the shows I actually chose for Spring 2025:

This post, as per usual, is devoted to first episodes of each of the shows that I hope to finish in Spring 2025, so let's get to it!
But this season, I am looking at every interesting first episode - so that I can decide what is actually good, what only sounds good and what to focus on. After all, first impressions are everything!

Each episode will get a rating, that will hopefully help me decide what to watch and what to skip. Those ratings are "💖" (keep watching), "👍" (not bad, but there are better), "👎" (this might get dropped).

Lazarus

Lazarus is a wonderful thriller/futuristic/sci-fi-ish anime that has so much potential to be the best show of the season.
I am enjoying the plot, the characters and the universe the authors threw us into... but it wouldn't be me, if I didn't complain about something.

This time it's the imbalance between CGI-ed backgrounds with incredible design and lazy art & animation.

[See what I mean? Look at his hands. You cannot even count his fingers.]

But all in all, it's good. The visuals itself are great and with all the biblical references and great camera work they balance out the emo main character and over-done "30 days left to live" philosophy and plot.

Needless to say, I am looking forward to where this will go. I do hope it will not disappoint me!

Witch Watch

The show I had high hopes for was Witch Watch. However...

It hit all the rom-com stereotypes in the first minutes in a way that didn't really come out as neither natural or funny. The comedy aspect is so weak - it's like it's counting on people liking "absurd" comedy, (otherwise called chaos comedy)... and that took away from the entertainment for me. It feels like there is nothing serious about this show, which for me is a really disappointing revelation.

The art style is cute and the animation was really nice. The story could be great as well if they took a different approach. Quality-wise I don't have a problem with it. It's the execution with which they decided to tackle the story that misses the mark for me.

Kidou Senshi Gundam GQuuuuuuX

I am not exactly a mecha fan, but there is something about this show that is drawing me closer. The art style & character design is very fun, because it looks unique in a traditional way. None of that "I want it to look real" stuff, but a fool proof animation.

For now, the story makes zero sense to me and as someone dear to me said: "Fuck the [3D] mechas, I don't give a fuck about the mechas"... But there is something about it, that just makes me want to keep watching.

One more thing... the visuals????

👍

Summer Pockets

Summer Pocket is a heavily Visual Novel-ish show, that is adorable and confusing and stays true to everything Japanese novels represent.

The male MC is an emo boy that only knows pain and suffering and lives a life where nothing has meaning and everything is doomed to start.
However things will change when he arrives on a small island, and stats meeting random girls... And apparently, that is that.

The story didn't show us anything for now, but there is something interesting about it. So, we'll have to see what happens.

Apocalypse Hotel

Another show that disappointed me, but only slightly.

The Hotel whose staff are robots are awaiting for the return of humanity. They were wiped out a long time ago, and now the hotel staff is just keeping the place clean and sparkly, trying to survive despite not having the proper things to keep everything in check.

One day, the doors open and the employees cannot believe their eyes - a guest!
But... it's not a human, is it? It seems to be an alien...

I don't really know what to make of this yet, but a part of me hopes that something great will happen, as to spice things up a bit. I want this to be more interesting, really.

Kakushite! Makina-san!!

Viewer discretion advised!

The only reason I am watching this is, that I was teasing my boyfriend about it. Needless to say, we trash-talked the shit out of the first 12 episodes and it was so incredibly funny.

There is no real plot. Hidden between lines is an absurd comedy. The character designs are very very cute... And that's all that can be said.

Zatsu Tabi: That's Journey

Given the synopsis of this show, I expected the first episode to give us an overview of who the main character is and why she needs to go on a journey. Instead we got a pretty good taste of what the rest of the anime is going to look like.

And in this case, it's not exactly a good thing.

That's Journey is educative. It gives us locations and details about what we can see in certain places, how much we'd pay and what all we can experience. While I think that's nice, I wasn't sold on the idea.

I wanted something more psychological. I wanted something deeper. But I am not getting it.

Hibi wa Sugiredo Meshi Umashi

Cute and simple story about four college girl students who have a special relationship with food. Wanting to cook or enjoy it to the fullest, being surrounded by food...

It's not plot heavy by any means. But the animation & art are so nice and smooth that it easily created one of the best show this season is producing, quality-wise (and that's sad, in a way). I am definitely going to join the main characters on their journey. I cannot wait to see what this show brings!

Maebashi Witches

Maebashi Witches broke the 4th wall 144 times during the very first episodes. It is so self-aware it's twice as fun.

I love the colours, and the scheme the girls brought. I enjoy the idea of helping people not by "teleporting" them to their goal destination but by helping them and encouraging them. As for the characters themselves, I have to say, I hate the main character and her arch nemeses. Those girls will kill me.

The CGI and singing at the end nearly ended my life, but all in all it was actually pretty funny. It's staying on my PTW and I will go back to it one day.

Chuuzenji-sensei Mononoke Kougiroku:
Sensei ga Nazo wo Toiteshimau kara.

I loved the comment I heard during simul watch, so you know I am adding it here.

"They're raw dogging it all night long."

This show is pretending to be a mystery-slash-supernatural package. But it goes along the lines of 'the supernatural can be explained with logic' which is fine but that's exactly what I don't look forward to in supernatural shows.

I want to be spooked and I want it to be unexplained. I want them to fight against non-existent phenomenons and maybe get hurt on their journey, so we can see how they grew.... yada yada yada.

The character design is without flavor, the characters themselves aren't interesting in the slightest and the sexual tension between our mc and her new teacher is so heavily present, you cannot ignore it. And that just adds to everything that I cannot swallow about this show.

It definitely is worth two more episodes. But for now, I couldn't care less.

Koupen-chan

Koupen-chan is nothing spectacular. We've seen it many many times again. It's a short, 1-minute animation with an adorable animal that takes us on a journey though their colorful world.

It's a "feel good" anime, and it does it's job nicely.

mono

Mono is a CGDCT anime about girls from a photography club. They don't really understand the appeal itself - and they do it their own way. While they have their own... strange motivations.

But slowly, they are warming up to the idea of taking pictures and understanding what's so amazing at it. With actions camera and 360° camera they are ready to start their new adventure.

The art design is somehow unique with the eyebrows, and it's so silly I enjoy it so much. The characters themselves are easy-going and silly, so it's really nice to watch them and see them interact and have fun.

This show is nothing special and nothing ground breaking, but it's really really nice. I am definitely going to follow along.

Kuroshitsuji: Midori no Majo-hen

What do you even want me to say? I am completely biased when it comes to this series and I even forgave CloverWorks for butchering some parts of Kuroshitsuji.

The new arc is very interesting and since it's been a while since I read it, refreshing it in color, seeing the characters move and hearing their voices again is one of the best experiences this season.

I would especially like to pinpoint the ending, that is beautifully made. The animation, the design and the shadows of characters from past arc are exquisite. There is not a single thing I don't enjoy about Midori no Majo-hen.

I cannot wait to see how this goes!

Aru Majo ga Shinu Made

This is a sob story. Be warned.

Meg is a 17 year old witch that just learned about her curse. Because of it, she needs to collect 1000 tears of joy, which means she has to touch the hearts of people all around her.

Starting with the first one, we are thrown in the fate of a family - a father and young daughter - who just lost their wife and mother.
It's incredibly sad and one eye won't stay dry.
But the message behind it was really amazing and I feel like they chose the right words to convey what is important to remember when someone dear passes and you feel that overwhelming weight of regret and unfulfilled promises.

Loosing someone is hard. This anime portrayed it gently and with care. I cannot wait to see what comes next. I have high hopes for this one!

WIND BREAKER Season 2

The second season picks up where the first left off, and we are immediately thrown into a fight. The visuals are better than I remembered and the animation is working nicely - so you can tell they out effort into the first episode and really want to take it seriously.

Those who know what the first season was about can look forward to the story progressing, those who don't - go give the first season a try. It might just be worth it.

Sentai Daishikkaku 2nd Season

Just as good as the previous season is all I need to say.

The story pops, and continues practically where the last season ended. The characters immediately pulled me back in and gave me that happy feeling of getting to see more and more.

[SpyxFamily reference?]

We get a quick recap that I appreciated a lot - and then we went back to what was important.

It stays true to it's quality - using stupid CGI and having catchy opening and ending with fun animation. They immediately broke the 4th wall, which is one of the aspects I love the most.

Adding to that, we have more characters introduced and the previously introduced relationships are just getting more and more detailed. Good first episode, that really makes me hope for a great season!

The season starts out slowly, but surely. I will keep my fingers crossed to actually keep up this time, but I already know that's an impossible task.

Anyway. I will see you in a few months, when we tackle the Conclusion post. Bye!
