Anime Wrap-Up #16

Review speedrun!!!!!!

This time, I am covering these shows:

I took a long time doing this part... so some shows might seem like they were written in a hurry. Unfortunately, not having time means coming back to one part of the post a few times a week... and that means the thoughts and goals in writing are not always clear.

Still, I will try to make it as clean as possible.

Gakkou no Yuurei

I talked about this show in this part of Wrap-Up, and I remember loving it. I did have mixed feelings, but mostly I decided it was fun and good quality for the year it was made in.

Unfortunately, only one episode was released and I was very sad that I couldn't finish it. This time, I checked the series just because I was a bit bored - and what do you know! Another episode was found and released with subtitles.

This time, it wasn't the same. The anime had live-action scenes, and I have to admit it was cringe. Extremely. Half of the stories weren't scary, but they were sad. Another half was tinted with the live action scenes... so overall, the second episode was more of a miss than it was a good experience.

They still were interesting though, the stories itself. So you know, I am sticking to this and hoping for more to come.

6/10.

Hibike! Euphonium
(Sound! Euphonium)

Hibike! is another popular series, from the hands of Kyoto Animation. And it shows. The art style is very smooth, and the boys from this show are really just a copy paste. But I am not complaining, because I find them incredibly hot.

This one is a story of Kumiko, a girl playing in a wind ensemble. She has her worries, past relationships that need saving and a difficult relationship with her instrument, "eupho".
Not to mention, with a club this big, it is not easy to dodge other problems - members quitting, crying, going through tough times. Hiding secrets, putting on a second face and of course, there are love triangles too.
Highschool life, like any other.

Art and animation are beautiful, the characters are not much... but from the very start is a decent show. What I care the most about is music - since it's one of the genres, I have high hopes.
And thankfully for me, I love the pieces they chose, I love the sound of it... and the ending is such a bop, I am living.

Another thing I appreciated was the commercial break screens - when they showed an instrument, it's name, who played and *how* it sounds in the background. That was cool.
AND AND AND. It has a plus size character that is just a regular everyday normal human being.
Chef's kiss.

Unexpectedly, there is much more drama that there seemed to be. Emotions regarding practising, emotions regarding wanting to make it to the band, feeling sad for those who didn't make it, facing their own crushed dreams and hopes... It's been a wild ride in the last few episodes.

And we got yuri baited, unfortunately.

I also finished a special that followed and it did bait me into wanting to watch more... so all in due time... 😏

Hibike! is a solid 7/10 , but it stepped up and showed some strong sides, so it climbed up to 8/10.

Komi-san wa, Komyushou desu.
(Komi Can’t Communicate)

Komi Can't Communicate was a huge boom back when it was airing, and while the second season didn't get that much hype, it is still considered one of the most popular shows of it's season.
And that's where my problem lies, as usual.

The show itself is not bad. It has interesting characters, that are playful - we have an obsessed yandere, childhood friend of everyone, a good guy with funny past and a popular girl that has that one weird thing about her, that's completely crazy about her first friend - said guy.

However, where my problem is, is the pacing of the anime. I found myself bored by all those short stories told in one single episode, because there really wasn't anything to keep my interest high. In 5 minutes, it was all over and they moved on something completely different - in time, space, setting... It just had no clear line.

Komi is adorable, and I will finish the second season as well, because it's not bad... but don't expect too much of this show, because it cannot give you much.

Update: The second season didn't bring anything new, so it was simply boring. Still a good show, just not worth the hype. I don't think.

Romantic Killer

Hi! Check out the review! Here.

Kimetsu no Yaiba: Hashira Geiko-hen
(Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Hashira Training Arc)

Did you ever wonder who the Hashira are? Why they look so different to the other Demon Slayers? Did you ever wonder how to become one? Or what kind of training they go through?
Well, wonder no more, because this season of Kimetsu no Yaiba is going to give you at least some answers. But also... so many new questions.

Another amazing season with slightly stupid writing that is more than worth your time.

Saiki Kusuo no Ψ-nan
(The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.)

Saiki is one of the comedy shows that you cannot believe exist... but at the same time you cannot believe that you didn't know about this sooner!

With simple art style, weird animation at times and world where whatever is possible and things change based on convenience of the main character... it creates a story that is simply perfect.

It has romance, it has stereotypes, it has bizzare-world-situations... It's perfect! And there's more than I could have guessed. How will I ever finish this??

Noroi no One Piece

Three short stories about young girls and cursed dresses. It's not breathtaking enough to keep in memory, but the satisfaction of "yeah, this was exactly what I guessed it would be" stayed with me.

I definitely recommend this, just because it's fun and looks good. 90s anime always looks good.

Mask Danshi wa Koishitakunai no ni
(Mask Danshi: This Shouldn't Lead to Love)

Yaoi. With sexy times. If you know what that means, you cannot go wrong with it.

Just... be careful. It can get wild.

Hinata no Aoshigure
(Sonny Boy & Dewdrop Girl Rain in the Sunshine)

And adorable story of two young friends, who have to fight the heartbreaking trope of one of them moving with their parents far far away.

How strong is their friendship, and will they survive this awful goodbye?

10/10 adorableness, but it's not very clear and definitely not long enough.... while simultaneously being way too long.

Love Live! School idol project 2nd Season

I am finally done with the main series. You have no idea how painful it was. The second season reminded me of everything I hated on Love Live! while the movie that followed brought me into a place of "it's not that bad, come on...".

The movie was good enough to make me consider watching more from this series. We'll see how that will go... For now, I am just happy I am done.

Ore wo Suki nano wa Omae dake ka yo: Oretachi no Game Set
(ORESUKI: Are you the only one who loves me?:
Our Playball / Our End Run / Our Game)

Another thing I am finally done with. The main series was killing me. I remember how bored I was despite having fun, which confuses me greatly. It is insane how weird all of this is.
But the movie was more than good and I think it wrapped up everything nicely.

I can imagine hundred ways of doing it better... but a thousand ways of screwing this up... so you know what? I am happy with what we got.

Kubikiri Cycle: Aoiro Savant to Zaregotozukai
(Kubikiri Cycle: The Blue Savant and the Nonsense User)

This was a simulwatch with someone I absolutely adore... but it was a hard watch. While he enjoyed it to the fullest, I almost died after the first episode.

The difference in opinions? He is a huge fan of Bakemonogatari series, while I couldn't get through the first episode in neither of 5 attempts.
Let me explain.

This show promises a murder mystery. But it does in a way where logic and reason are bigger than universe itself and everything is so complicated that each character has to be five steps ahead of the other.

Some of the characters are sooo relatable... or are they? Some of the characters are suspicious. Or are they? Some of the character are significant... or are they?
What is what and who are we? What is happening in the world? Is a world even the place we know it to be? Is visual part of this show helpful or build to just confuse?

I know it sounds good. And as you read, it does work on some people. But it didn't work on me, unfortunately.

Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!: Take On Me

AAAnd one more in the series that I finally finished. I was very much scared of watching this movie because Chuunibyou felt like a never ending loop. And this one was just the same.

In the end, nothing changed and no conclusion was drawn. Not even "she is this way and that is alright". It ended on a note of "we will see..." and that is a pretty shitty ending to get after what, 3 seasons?

I am glad it's over.

Given: Hiiragi mix

Given is known for being a heavily psychological dive into minds of young men, that are going through more than just accepting who they are.

As the name suggest, this movie is primarily focused on Hiiragi, a childhood friend of Mafuyu. On him, his relationship to music and his relationship to Mafuyu's ex and his very own friend Shizusumi, who is also his bandmate.

Apart from that, we do get small shots of Haruki's new relationship, Mafuyu's feelings and the future & present of Given - the band. But that's not what's nearly as important as acceptance this movie shows.

Getting over your own complicated feelings, that you never forgave yourself for... that you have to get over so you can open your arms to the fate that is knocking on your doors. It... is a lot. But Given is doing that over and over again. And I cannot wait for another movie.

K-ON! Movie

You guessed it, another ending to a really boring series that was eating me alive. But I am done and I don't ever have to go back.

I like Kyoto animation as a studio, but jesus jesus, why do they become boring after a while? It's actually hard to swallow this one, because I am a big fan of the studio, so not liking their adaptations is like stabbing myself in the back. 😂

The movie felt out of place and I was definitely disconnected from the characters. Maybe I am just getting too old for watching shows about high school girls...

Apart from all of this, I watched a lot of specials and extra episodes. There is no point in talking about them or mentioning them. But it was a nice time, and I enjoyed most of them. I had pretty good four months!
