Fall 2024 - In a Nutshell + Conclusion

Fall 2024 came and went do quickly, I didn't even blink. Let's take a look at the most boring season I have ever encountered.

This is what I watched in Fall 2024:

Uzumaki

The show I was most excited about and probably disappointed me the most was Uzumaki, a horror anime from my very own Junji Ito.

The story follows a young couple caught in the middle of a phenomena that causes everything to spiral. At first it's just the wind and grass... then it's hair and random stuff... and then... people?

It's a good psychological play with elements of creepy and disgusting that always work so well in the hand of horror master. I remember reading the manga and loving it so much. So when I heard the anime being announced, I was out of the roof happy.

The first episode was stellar. Everything moved, the attention to detail was incredible, the effect of black-and-white only worked so well and it looked like Junji Ito will finally get the adaptation he deserves.

But after the first episode... everything dropped. The quality, the animation, the pacing. It just... wasn't as good. They stepped up for the last episode, but it never reached the quality of the first episode.

Still, as a story it's incredible. As an anime, it is strongly watchable. I will definitely rewatch it in the future and I recommend this to everyone.

Dandadan

The most popular show of this season is definitely Dandadan. Having episodes leaked in the past, it attracted a lot more people and became a big talk.

I can see why. The story sounds interesting, the characters and likeable, the comedy works incredibly well and let's be honest, female characters are very cute.
Again, it's creepy, dealing with ghosts and aliens. It's engaging, even though the story line dragged for a whole season. It's silly, and unexpectedly stupid in some aspects... but good.

I do, however, have to say that I think this show is overrated. It was not as good as I expected it to be, and in certain moments I was actually bored. Like properly bored.

One thing that I found ridiculous to the point it ruined my entertainment was the need for sexualizing everything. The horny jokes, the naked/underwear scenes, the way everything was always about balls or "weenies"... it just wasn't funny to me.

It might be weird for someone that I focus on this, but once you overdo something or miss the timing or mood... it just starts bothering you.

Bananya: Around the World

Don't judge me. It's adorable and we all need a break sometimes.
Now I am not saying the series is good. I am actually saying the opposite. This is such a waste of time! XD

But watching cute banana-cats existing in different countries and places and spaces... it's relaxing. It's silly. It's adorable.

And having "Eren Yeager" make cute meow noises is more than funny.

Murai no Koi
(Murai In Love)

The first show I gave chance to this season "properly" is Murai in Love - a rom-com anime about a high school student who fell in love with his homeroom teacher Tanaka.

Ignoring the very obvious problem (the age gap), the concept works well. Forbidden love, the boy being younger than the girl, and obviously all these hidden secrets.
It reminds me of "Kiss Him Not Me" a lot - besides the unrequited feelings, there is also the added element of the love interest looking like a beloved otome character.

Listen. I am a simple woman. I close my eyes, and just enjoy how stupid it is, because I am a fan of romance. And Idk, this is checking most of my boxes. (Though sure, I would maybe like if the age gap was moved just a bit...)

Anyway. The anime works as a simple mapping of MC's everyday life, while he keeps asking his teacher to marry her, and does all he can to make her fall in love with him. And his friends and classmates are... sort of weirdly supportive? It's funny!

My opinion about it changed halfway though - because it became very boring. The novelty of it ended very soon, and the choices that were made in the writing sort of set me back from enjoyment. It didn't feel like a forbidden romance, but more like a romance triangle combined with some messy conclusions and... who knows. It just missed the mark in the end.

For romance fans it is a good show, so I still think it's worth giving a shot. Just don't expect much in the animation department.

Kekkon Suru tte, Hontou desu ka
(365 Days to the Wedding)

This is your usual "fake-dating" scenario, in which two people that barely know each other find it the best option to fake-marry. It's so easy, so simple and it works so well because there is something adorable about seeing people fall for each other.

Regardless of who you are, how you act, or what kind of soft sides/weaknesses you have - someone can still fall for you, just by being around you. Adorable. Sort of impossible in real life, but adorable.

Apart from the usual "getting to know each other and slowly falling in love" nothing else is happening. You have the usual "childhood-friend-shows-up" which sets up a love confession, that is however interrupted by something silly and pushes the real relationship few steps back...
Then the interruption of "second couple", in this case the guy's coworker Gonda, who (despite not being the best looking) finds a really cute girlfriend thanks to being himself... They decided to mix that up as well though. By giving her a kid, and making her a single mom, stretching this plot line for a bit more. (Only to abandon it completely for the time being, and focus on getting the two main characters together, and have them get engaged despite not actually dating.)

It's all cute and adorable and lovely... but unless the reason you're watching this show is the romance itself, it somehow feels boring and flat and not interesting at all.

Kankin Kuiki Level X
(Lockdown Zone: Level X)

I sort of hoped this would save me. A psychological horror about entity called X (pronounced Sai for some reason), with a schoolgirl as a main character sounded more than okay.
There really is not enough horror anime out there.

But the animation lacked, the story got out of hand, the monster was ridiculous and our character needed 3 episodes to cross every line, break every rule. It was sooo stupid.

And then it turned out that Ryoka (the main character) is stuck in some kind of loop, where she "wakes up" from the dream after getting killed in the previous life. Which made it a bit more interesting, but it still wasn't enough to save the series.

Another wasted potential, that could probably work much better as a comic. Unfortunately. If I was fair, this should have gotten much worse rating - but I am a sucker for the tropes it uses.

Overall feeling

I have a beef to pick with Fall 2024. Where are all the good shows? Why was there nothing airing?? How is this fair??
You're telling me I used to have a problem picking all the shows I wanted to watch and having to narrow it down from around 20 to... this mess of picks that I am unhappy about? Wow. How the turntables.

I think this is the weakest season I have encountered so far, and it is a bit of a shock to realise and find out that that can happen. It's such a miss, honestly.
But it's good thing - at least I am not upset about missing out on a lot of fun things.

I am just glad this is over.

ANIME RANKED
Let's take a look at my official score:

The second ranking is naming a "winner" and "looser" of the season.
  1. "Crowned" is an anime that ranked the best overall during this season.
  2. "Clown hat" is an anime that I had high hopes for, but disappointed me the most.
  3. "Heart" is an anime I didn't expect to like.
  4. "Broken heart" is an anime that I liked, but wanted to be better.

Honorable mention:

Come on. Juji Ito cannot be missed. Go. Watch it. Right now. It's amazing.

I think you should check out this anime:

Despite this being rather bad, I think it's worth some time or at least giving it a shot. It uses all good horror tropes, it has good voice acting - great music, and it could be good in the manga format. I am guessing.

If you're a fan of Higurashi, or if you like time loops... you will not loose anything by trying this one out.
